Downtown Goodness: Lola’s at the Bowery

Before even setting foot into Lola’s, one can’t help but notice the unique logo, and the unique interior design is even more intriguing.

The doors and windows are etched with a Dia de los Muertos (Mexican celebration to honor loved one’s passed away, translated in English to ’day of the dead’) skull sporting a decorated sombrero and taunting you to join the fun inside. Once inside the spacious restaurant and bar, the ambiance of Spanish influence is evident and an array of eclectic artwork adds splashes of color to the room. The bar is full service and Lola’s wine menu boasts 33 selections to enjoy alone or pair with a meal to enhance the dining experience.

The food is presented nicely and very pleasing to the palette. The Focaccia bread is made with rosemary and thyme and made fresh daily. The caprese salad is mixed greens with smooth chunks of mozzarella, tomato and a nice balsamic vinegar dressing. Salty and crisp is the best way to describe the calamari, it comes with a unique honey dijon mustard/chipotle/mango dipping sauce which accompanies the dish well. The pizza margherita has a homemade thin crust and flavorful taste. It is served with a side of marinara sauce; I’m not a big fan of marinara but Lola’s isn’t too sweet or too bold and adds a hint of flavor of the pizza. The filet mignon is thick, juicy and tender with a crispy layer of bacon wrapped around the meaty goodness. It is served with asparagus and roasted red pepper mashed potatoes which were tasty but luke warm, not hot when served. I asked Jenny, who took excellent care of us, what her favorite menu item is and she loves the scallops, however she says the chicken topped with goat cheese in a creamy sauce sauce seems to be the house favorite, with the tapas coming in at a close second.

My favorite part of dinner is always dessert and Lola is crazy good at creating baked treats, which of course is her specialty and she makes all the restaurants delightful sweets. The moon cake is fluffy with a creamy vanilla filling and served chilled. The cake is drizzled with chocolate ganache and powdered sugar is dusted along the rim of the plate.

Lola’s has been serving great food and drinks in Tulsa for almost five years. She incorporates some Mexican/Mediterranean style which is inspired by her former restaurant in Santa Fe. I was curious as to how the Dia De Los Muertos theme came in, since I love that theme and was born on the day it is celebrated. Jenny shared with us that this is another inspiration Lola brought with her from Santa Fe. She even has a little section of Dia merchandise for sale, when I go back I am most definitely buying a Dia magnet for my fridge!

Lola’s is one of my favorite places! Just fyi, that’s not marinara served with the pizza. It’s adobo sauce. The chicken adobo that Jenny mentioned is out of this world!

Lola’s was the go to place for me and my husband–especially for special occasions. WAS is now the key word. The last two times we went the food was dry and bland and nothing like our previous (numerous!) visits. We always order the same thing so the difference was evident– I couldn’t eat more than a few bites last time I ordered the chicken with adobo sauce and goat cheese. Lipstick on my wine glasses, not refilling drinks. Not bringing bread. And of course it is NOT a cheap place to have a bad experience. I’m glad you all were treated well (Jenny is a doll!)and had a good experience. I just can’t risk another trip. Will be spending my money at LXI and a few other new finds.
