Shiloh’s-Taking Me Back to Tennessee

August 24th, 2009 by Misty – Comments (4)

I moved here in 2005 and have loved experiencing all the new foods, but oh how I have missed the soulful family cooking I grew up with in Tennessee. I’d never heard of Shiloh’s until I saw it on here and when I brought it up to others they were practically drooling over the name! I knew I had to go and I will DEFINITELY be back. Stepping in the door I felt like I was back in Tennessee with the atmosphere and look of so many places I grew up going to. It’s the kind of place where you can tell they care about being homey like being in your grandparents house. As soon as my boyfriend and I were seated they brought out a couple of rolls. Now please understand not a couple being stingy, but because that is all that will fit in the basket! From the shape of the bottoms, they bake them in muffin tins and I think because of that part being kind of packed tight when the dough gets to the top they just explode! They are so delicious…light and airy. I would go there just for them. On the table is a tall squeeze bottle like the ones for ketchup, but inside is their strawberry rhubarb sauce which is wonderful on the rolls. I hadn’t had that flavor combination in years…it took me back to a family cookout having strawberry rhubarb pie, like reliving a memory. The rolls don’t need anything they are so perfect on their own, but I could eat that stuff right out of the bottle:)

I ordered the chicken fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes while my boyfriend ordered the pot roast, fried okra and macaroni and cheese. Despite my upbringing I grew up not liking cream gravy, but I have come to discover that was mostly due to my dad’s way of making it and this proved it. The chicken was huge like half the size of my plate with gravy over it and the potatoes. I was a bit apprehensive, afraid it would be a thick blanket so I could taste nothing else…Boy was I wrong!!It was rich and creamy, but not overpowering allowing me to taste the still there crunch around the chicken and real mashed potatoes, not the ones typical of so many that taste like they were stole from your elementary school cafeteria. Their mac and cheese is soupier in a way then I am used to, but upon eating I understood. The taste of the sauce is perfect, but allows for you to still get the taste and texture of the noodles. I tried a bite of my boyfriends roast and it was so tender it would barely stay on the fork with just the right amount of gravy so you didn’t need a spoon. I couldn’t even finish my chicken, but when you first walk in your eyes are drawn to the HUGE pies and cobblers in the case right next to the door so I got a slice of butterscotch and he got a slice of chocolate. When they brought them to us the tops would barely close due to the size! They are enormous and delicious too. Another sweet I grew up on the butterscotch was so yummy balanced with the meringue that had to be two inches thick, I have included a picture for proof.

I have to say thanks to this site for helping me discover a place in Broken Arrow that makes me feel like I have just visited my grandmother! I already can’t wait to go back
