Genghis Grill – Mongolian Stir Fry, Cherry Street

January 28th, 2010 by Brian Schwartz – Comments (10)

Tulsa now has a Genghis Grill, right on 15th Street near Utica. Since this is a chain, I’ll just say a few words about the Tulsa location — such as the prices, which are evidently lower than most locations, $11 at lunch for all you can eat. It features Asian-influenced stir fries, made to order. In fact, totally selected by you, and it looks like a Top Chef competition. You’re given a metal bowl holding about a pint. You go to a counter with a selection of raw meat and seafood and put it in your bowl. Then you go to a similar counter with vegetables. A third counter has lots of spices (e.g ginger powder, chili powder) which you can toss on the bowl. Then you put your bowl on a counter near the wok and get a second smaller bowl and fill it with one of a large selection of sauces (or blend them), put that bowl next to the first bowl, and call the chef. He puts them on a huge flat wok (like a Pakistani tawa) and cooks your order, which a waiter brings to your table.

I filled my bowl with shrimp and steak cubes and tossed in a few mushrooms. (Meat is a better deal than broccoli.) I put in some ginger, too much as it turns out — best to skip the spices unless you know what you’re doing. Then I filled my sauce bowl, choosing “red curry peanut” from the 14 sauces on tap. It all tasted quite good … not like a Thai panang curry or anything else authentically Asian (and it’s not supposed to be) but good nonetheless. And where else can you get unlimited good-quality shrimp cooked to order for $11?

I speak enough Chinese to order food not on any English menu. Spanish French Italian too (not fluently but food-ently) My favorite restaurant is Jean-Georges in New York. But those NYC chefs would sell their soul to get the produce available from the farms around Inola.

I had never heard of Genghis Grill before this location popped up. Now me and my husband (especially him) go there all the time. They have a membership type card you can sign up for. I think if you buy 10 you get the 11th free. Or something like that. He’s already redeemed his free meal. We’ve yet to do the all you can eat because we’ve managed to pack plenty into the metal bowl.

    We love Genghis!

i went. little confusing but the first few weeks in a restaurants life often can be. the ‘corporate trained the newly trained staff did a decent on greeting and seating us, but lost me when, on approaching my table said, ‘Greetings, my name is Jonathan and ill be your ‘WARRIOR’ tonight, please follow me and ill guide you thru our patented 5 step ordering process” made us both roll our eyes and wonder what this was going to entail. so we followed him towards that area, we hung a hard right and split, putting our bowls down at the hosts counter…. we went next door to chipolte for some simple tacos. . i may go back but the first feelings being mixed in with all that corporate skeezy lingo really did nothing for me….

    but hey, hows the food?

I love Mongolian BBQ, and I usually go the Great Wall at 81st and Lewis. Now I have a new place to try out!

Zach- I totally would have laughed out loud (and been far less optimistic about the whole experience) had I met “Jonathan the WARRIOR”!

We went today for lunch. Thankfully, our hostess/server (we ate out on the patio since it was gorgeous out) was not cheesy, but very nice and helpful. We skipped the printed recipe cards and made up our own. I had Pork, scallops, beef, squid and tofu (odd matches but wanted to sample several things)with just a few herbs & veggies (onions, red chilies, mushrooms, scallions, cilantro) and an egg. Along with some spices I used the Khan Pao sauce (not bad, but I will likely skip the sauce altogether next time, just not a fan of processed stuff in general)and the Udon noodles.

The dish turned out pretty well, aside from being well overcooked. Next time I will just ask them to cook it less. Being a chef, it is hard for me not to enjoy someplace where I can be in charge of my own entree, and then not have to do any of the clean up!

Keith- I thought Great Wall was at 71st & Yale. Did they move?

I went back a few weeks ago and had a bowl of scallops and squid with “stir fry” sauce. I didn’t like the flavor of the scallops (I’ve been spoiled by the diver scallops at White Owl) and the sauce, compared to an authentic Chinese sauce, was like the film “Bride Wars” compared to one of Shakespeare’s better plays. On the other hand, unlimited food for $11 does have its charms…

I ate at a Genghis in Dallas the first time and finding one in Tulsa was good news. The staff was great and helpful seeing how it could be a bit confusing the first time you go. The food is great and my two young boys loved it. Beware of to much “Dragon Salt”! 4*’s

I thought it was okay, but I’d just assume go to a Chinese buffet that has the Mongolian style BBQ section as part of it, that way you can get more variety. But as far as selection goes with the sauces, seasonings, etc. Genghis can’t be beat. I just wasn’t overly impressed, but it is a good experience for people who have never been to a place like this before.

Also, if you’re into hot stuff, be careful adding the hot pepper sauces at Genghis and other similar places. I made the mistake when I was a kid at one of these types of places of burning off a few layers of taste buds. I love hot stuff, but it doesn’t take much to make it really hot. And everyone I know who have been here and likes hot stuff has made the same mistake their first time going.
